The U.S. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) mandates that service dogs must be permitted onboard trains. This legal protection guarantees that individuals with disabilities are provided equal access to public transportation, including rail travel.
Train staff are allowed to confirm that a dog is a service animal by asking two specific questions:
· Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?
· What task or work has the dog been trained to perform?
It is your responsibility to ensure that your service animal remains under your control at all times. This includes using a leash, harness, and maintaining voice control.
Train personnel have the authority to request the removal of a service dog from the train if certain conditions are present. These conditions include:
· The dog is not under control.
· The dog poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others.
· The dog is not housebroken.
These guidelines are designed to balance the accessibility needs of individuals with disabilities with the safety and comfort of all passengers.
It is important to note that these regulations apply specifically to service animals. Emotional support or comfort animals do not receive the same federal protections for transportation services and are not allowed onboard trains.
Trained service animals are welcome!
